PROFESSIONAL INTEGRATION

The profession of landscape architect is one which supports the changes taking place in society, the economy and policies. Decentralisation, increasing attention to environmental and climate issues, the preservation of biodiversity and the improvement of the living environment for the health and well-being of residents require high-level professionals with recognised and cross-disciplinary skills, such as landscape architects.

The professional practices of landscape architects are becoming increasingly diverse and are adopting an ever-wider variety of forms. In project management, landscape architects (whether salaried or self-employed) mainly perform design functions within landscape agencies or multi-disciplinary teams made up of architects, town planners, landscape architects or scientific specialists such as ecologists and engineers.

Increasingly, landscape architects are becoming involved in the decision-making and commissioning process, and are taking on the role of project managers. They may join the civil service at national or local level, and are recruited mainly by local authorities for design, planning or development positions, with supervisory responsibilities. Many private companies are also using them for project management assistance and decision-making support.

Landscape architects are called upon to play an important role as social mediators between the various stakeholders involved in spatial planning. This is achieved by listening to other professions, practices and activities which transform inhabited spaces. These include residents, associations, farmers, technicians and shopkeepers, etc. The number and variety of approaches to raising awareness, facilitating and supporting development projects are increasing.

It is also possible to continue your studies after the Diplôme d’État in Landscape Architecture by pursuing doctoral studies in fundamental research or more applied topics. Research in the field of landscape architecture is being developed and expanded by the INSA group and the network of landscape architecture schools, with the support of the French Ministry of Ecological and Solidarity Transition.

The Diplôme d’État in Landscape Architecture from the École de la Nature et du Paysage is a course recognised by IFLA, the International Federation of Landscape Architects.
